Memphis Memorial Day Weekend Guide 2017

Memorial Day is a time to honor and salute those who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our country. Spend time with your loved ones at these family-friendly featured events this holiday weekend.

Join The Fourth Bluff Project, The TapBox, Grace Askew (8-9 pm) and Tonya Reneé Dyson (6:30-7:30 pm) for a party in Memphis Park. The JoyRide, Memphicity Design’s pop-up t-shirt shop, and Friends of the Memphis Animal Shelter will be there. RiverPlay will be fully activated with roller skate rentals, half-court basketball, ping pong, giant chess, and more. We’ll have ten beers on tap, amazing Memphis talent on the mic, and one of the best views in the world of the mighty MIssissippi River. Come drink, eat, play and chill with us at Fourth Bluff Friday.

Kick off your summer at the Morton Museum’s annual outdoor movie night. This year’s film is Hidden Figures. Guided stargazing will be offered during the film by The Memphis Astronomical Society. Please bring a chair and/or blanket. Free popcorn and drinks will be provided while they last.

All activities take place at Rhodes College campus on the McCoy Theatre grounds. Visit the Community Arts Corridor for arts activities and information on youth arts programs around the city. Sample instruments of all types at the Musical Petting Zoo. They will even have musicians to help guide kids through their exploration as they play a horn, a guitar, or learn beatmaking. Support the Metamorphosis Project and OUTMemphis  by volunteering at this Clean Up Day event! You’ll meet at 9:45am at OUTMemphis headquarters and head over to the property which is .5 of a mile away. Lunch will be provided. Gloves and masks will also be provided. If you have lawn equipment, bring it along! Please dress appropriately as you will be working outside in weeds and tall grass. To sign up please RSVP to sreyes@outmemphis.org

Memphis in May presents its second annual 901Fest to showcase all things Memphis! This one day festival will present live entertainment from local artists on multiple stages, local area artists, local food & beverages, an airshow, and a 901-themed Fireworks Finale. Add Gossett-Audi’s Summer Symphony at the Live Garden to your Memorial Day celebrations with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Picnic under the stars surrounded by loved ones in the beautiful gardens while listening to the beautiful symphony. Ticket prices range from $20, $75, and $187.50, get your tickets here.

The Force is with you on Star Wars Night, which also includes postgame fireworks! The Redbirds are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first movie being released with specialty jerseys, which will be auctioned with proceeds benefitting Pitch In For Baseball, and the appearance of characters from Star Wars lore, including Darth Vader.

Memphis in May’s Memorial Day weekend presents the 5K and half marathon: the Great American River Run. Come participate or cheer on your loved ones as the run through the streets of downtown along the Mississippi River. The event will have food, drinks and live entertainment after the run! Register here, run starts at 7:00am!

The Redbirds are holding a special Memorial Day edition of postgame fireworks along with the fun and wacky ZOOperstars! Buy the specialty ticket that includes a Stadium Menu buffet, including hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. Field box tickets with buffet are $20 and the dugout ticket with buffet are $23. Sunday’s game starts at 6:35pm, Monday’s game starts at 12:05pm, get your tickets here.

Elmwood is giving another walking tour in honor of Memorial Day. You will get to visit private family mausoleums, Victorian-age funerary and more along the tour. The grounds are open from 8:00am-4:30pm and the tour costs $15 per person beginning at 10:30am for 90 minutes. Visitors are also welcome to take small American flags to place at gravesites of their choosing.

Honor those who have served our country as the local boy scouts, veterans’ organizations, and political figures pay tribute to them at the annual Memorial Day service. The service will include military honors and a live cannon salute.
